Re: Everyone isn't an Ethnic Minority

1) Dispossessed, poverty-stricken Southerners are a legacy of the war. Ancestors of the Chicago "Hillbillies" lost their lands as a result of the war and struggled to survive for generations before leaving the region in search of jobs.

Allan if those Union soldiers came down and tore your families' plantation up and set their Negroes free, yes that would surely amount to a heavy cash loss. The truth is your reasoning is based on a false premise from the very start. My ancestors lived in Western NC, Eastern TN and North GA. My grandfather...and yeah....everybody else his age around there. Lived, at least through to middleage, not much different from their very ancestors that had settled that land. A couple of generations before the Civil War. They lost family members and experience heart ache during the Civil War and other wars. They also lived through the Great Depression. Guess what? All this time, their lifestyle, way of living, most of the implements they used, remained basically the same. So please don't tell me that the Civil War made them moved North.

You've quoted from some magazine that are 50 or 60 years. Well, 50 or 60 years ago I had some family that was moving north. They didn't meet any two headed Yankee ogres that ate little Southern babies and they didn't spend any time in a Yankee concentration camp either. Did they meet some resentment? They sure did. That happens anytime, and I will guarantee you this will happen, when people of a different background meet. The fact is when Protestants, Jews, Catholics, Northerners and Southerners once see that the other are hard working, decent and honest. Those bad feelings....to a large extent... will cease.

2. Wartime propaganda depicting Southerners in a variety of unflattering ways, reinforcing older stereotypes of Southern whites which go back to the Revolution and earlier.

Did the South ever depict Northerners in an unflattering way? Are there Northern stereotypes, that Southerners believe which go back to the Revolution and earlier?

3) The image of the United States bestowing rights and privileges to people of white European ancestry only has been handed down to us by Mr. Lincoln and his wartime supporters as much or more than anyone else.

As there were few other citizens who could vote up to that time, I'd say that was right. I can't recall any black senators, justices or congressmen before then or women for that matter. It's my observation that the pendulum has changed in a radical direction now and white men are discriminated against and held up to ridicule. Which is also off-topic, but if Jamie let's us keep going back and forth, that's fine and dandy with me.
