Stan, David is of course right. The term "Redneck" has very deep and serious religious and national orginis. Some of the Scots Covenanters of the 1600s would sign in blood their protest against the established Church. Mostly Presbteryian, they would wear a red cloth around their neck, hence rednecks.
They were also called blackmouths by Anglicans, who said that they ate blackbeeries while hiding in the woods. The term Scots-Irish is also largely a misnomer...Ulster-Scots would be more correct. We discussed this on the board some few years back. Cracker also comes from a Scotts word meaning a talker or bragger.
