It's noteworthy that all of the former Confederate States and two of the border states voted to hold a Constitutional convention, while relatively few of the Union states did. Since the South had no indeolgical qualms about voting for monkeying around with the Constitution, I seriously doubt that they have suddenly experienced a new-found reverance for the old Constitution. I suspect that the reason for rescinding their vote is more of a tactical move than anything else. Maybe they realized that there was no guarantee that anything better would be written, and they would be worse off with a new one. What with the change in demographics and other political realities in this country, I know I'd be scared to death of a rewritten Constitution. Unlike the Founding Fathers, people today seem to be unable to compromise for the good of the country. "My way or the highway" as the saying goes, and the I'm afraid the South would lose that fight. That, in my opinion, is the reason for the change of mind.
