"Also, his take on Hood is very interesting"
I breifly scanned his comments on Hood. I never understood the man, Hood. In my opinion, I think that Johnston was a great stratigist, Lee was good when he could manuver. The best tactical general in terms of being able to read the situation and make the best use of his resources would be Cleburne. One thing to say for Hood, is that after he managed to destroy his army at Franklin and Knoxville, he did have the decency to resign his position. I would guess that Grant and Sherman were the best that the north had. Maybe Thomas and McPherson also. They also had their share of inept people. McClernand did not do to bad for being a political general. He is buried behind Lincoln's tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery here in Springfield. You ever been up here?
